Finally!
Well it's about bloody time. For the first time in 31 years the Socceroos have qualified for a World Cup berth. After 90 minutes of normal time, 30 minutes of extra time and a penalty shoot-out, the socceroos defeated Uraguay in a game they dominated but struggled to put away. The better team won on the night, but Uraguay have every right to be gutted after that cruellest of football devices, the shootout, decided the outcome in front of 80,000 rabid fans. The Socceroos will travel to Germany next year to compete in the biggest sporting event in the world, and hopefully win a pool match or two.

While not a huge soccer fan, I really enjoyed the game! It was so tense, great defence. Harry Kewell what a great game!
It's times like this that I don't totally hate sport!
Well there's a ringing endorsement.
Wasn't it Harry Kewell who did the spazzy miss kick?
I don't care if they want to pretend it was on purpose, it make him look un-co.
I will not pretend to suddenly have any interest in professional soccer (with exception of their marvelous wives) but I must say I was pretty excited when Dad told me this morning. I even squealed a little at his blow by blow description of the game!
Yes the most Genius spazzy miss-kick of all time.
I managed to score a ticket at the last minute so I went along to the game, big surprise - the Aussies actually can make some noise when they want. I'm not sure if it came across on tv but the Uruguay anthem was totally drowned out, they might have been singing humpty dumpty for all I could hear of it.
Their support was out-numbered about 100 to 1, I had a little old Uruguayan bloke to my left chattering on to himself in Spanish - I made sure I shook his hand at the end.
For the record it was Viduka (the captain) who missed his penalty, his 'boro team mate Schwarzer saved the day though. The rest of the game wasn't all that great - both sides were very nervy and I thought the visitors just about edged the first half, I still can't believe Recoba missed with just the keeper to beat. The Aussies came alive in the second half and really pressed for the winner, unlucky not to get it with a couple of the chances.
I left a couple of minutes after the end so missed the mass celebrations in George Street etc but did have a good chat with a dad and his 8 yr old son on the train home - the kid was on the phone to his mum for most of the way, he just kept saying "that was the best day ever" before falling fast asleep, sums it up nicely really.
I think Richie was referring to Kewell's miskicked cross before the first goal
Fair 'nuff, but it was also Kewell who laid the ball on a moment before in the build up to it, I thought he played a blinder last night, best he's played for a long while. Teh win!!!
How's England going in the cricket Flit?
Not too great or at least not as well as the English football team (beat Argentina on the w'end) or the UK league team (beat the Kiwi's) and tell me Matt, how are the Wallabies going?
Stuck in reverse i believe
I thought when I saw the headline "Rugby fan can't explain self mutilation" http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2005/11/16/1132016820398.html that it must be Wallabies related (probably post match distress), but no it turns out to be the bloody Welsh, again.
Damn, that's creepy.
only the welsh would cut their nuts off after they win
er, only the Welsh would cut their nuts off full stop.
Well! I leave you alone for a few hours and you go all verbal! Who'd've thought sport could generate such discussion!!
Viduka looked like a right wally with his penalty shoot....if you didn't know better it looked like he was trying to miss!
I must admit I only turned the game on half way through (spics and specs was on) so I only saw Australia doing a good job...I missed the 'spazzy kick' and apparent crappness before Kewell entered, but what I saw I enjoyed.
On the news tonight the Uraguayans were saying the reffing was crap...seems to be a favourite excuse of LOSERS!
Holy shit, Australia is in the world cup??? That is huge news! Together with the A league business might really make football take off! Fantastic!
You always have to focus on the negative, thanks a lot Jenny!
