More strange music news from France

Keeping up this month's foreign flavour...

Sitting in a lovely french café a few weeks ago, sipping on a coffee, and trying to keep my eyes off a pile of croissants just out of reach, my eyes took a little trip to a nearby TV screen and a dark-haired chanteuse singing in french. Hmm, I thought, that girl looks strangely like Tina Arena. But that would obviously make no sense. Or would it? Because it was! And it was the french people I was with who were surprised to find that she was Australian! Because she is a big star here, and has just released her latest french album, entirely in french, "Un Autre Universe." Not being a huge Tina fan myself, I don't know if her french offerings are the same as the Australian ones, just translated, or if they are entirely different albums.

She is also giving some concerts here in Paris in a few months (is it worth the €50? I can't decide...), and at the moment, her tour poster is all over the metro, and her songs all over the radio! Move over, Celine!

I guess it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise given the French love of dubious pop music. She's in good company though with the likes of The Hoff (Germany), Roger Whitaker (Germany again) and ample-chested Sam Fox (spotted on the bill for a Mumbai casino) all making the foreign language transition. Thinking about it I doubt Sam learnt any of the Indian languages. Or the audience cared.

Enjoying the riots?

I love riots, the true flavour of France.

Yes there's nothing like the tang of pepper spray in the air and the swish of a baton to let you know you're really alive.

It's mildly amusing that its the same country that spawned the phrase 'vive la differance'

So I see Tina is in good company if grouped in with ole Roger!

She seems to have died out here (except for in Evil's back catalogue) so it's good to see her thriving elsewhere.

Those riots looked really violent! Did you encounter them? or just see them on tele like us?

The riots have actually been a little frightening this time because they have been in Paris proper. I'll put a post on them actually, even though ma and pa will no doubt worry! But they (the riots, not my parents) are not that big actually.

It looks worse than it is, because they start from the protest marches which attract huge numbers of people (up to a million according to the organisors, up to 200 000 according to the police), but by far and away, most of the people are peaceful, and it is really only a couple of hundred people that don't really seem to even care about the issue but are just there to start trouble. Apparently, they even attack the other (peaceful) protestors!

Have you noticed how pumped up Tina's lips are? They could explode any minute!
