An apple a day

I was talking to some of the the other day about this organic fruit and veg buyers group that I've seen. The idea is that you pay $30 a week, they get whatever is in season from organic farms, then you get a box of random stuff.

I haven't tried it, so I can't vouch for it, but I love the idea! They operate out of Kirribilli or Leichardt. (Or Randwick but that might not help many of you).

Hiyah folks. Now, I know you're all science-y and all, but as the token artsy-fartsy chick I thought I'd take the liberty of making a Public Service Announcement.

Literal videos reloaded

I have previously posted on this subject but there are now far more of these around - most of them junk I have to say. Amongst the detritus is this gem, I suspect it's by the same people as the A-HA one, 'Mullet with headlights' hahahahaha

The perils of molecular gastronomy

Alex, beware when making ice cream. Don't make the same mistakes as this German chef.

My favourite winter salad

(After a conversation with Gretta last Thursday.)

I have this about 2 or 3 days a week during beetroot season. I just bake a couple of beetroot when I do Sunday night dinner and assemble in a few lunch containers ready to go, except the little tuna tins and bag of baby spinach which I keep at work and make a bed with to nestle the pink goodies in each day.

Baked beetroot, cooled, peeled and diced
Spring onion, chopped
Diced feta or goats cheese or goats’ feta
Green beans (optional)
Pecans, roughly chopped
Balsamic vinegar
Salad grade oil (olive, macadamia etc)
Baby spinach leaves
Tinned smoky tuna

Anyway, this is very funny, for anyone who liked either Be Kind Rewind or Terminator 2.

Friday Flashback

Three years ago today

Le Tour de Awesome

As you sport fans will already know, the 96th Tour de France kicks off tomorrow night at Midnight our time. For those of you unfamiliar, there is a great Tour 101 here. The first stage is a Time Trial through the streets of Monaco and should be a cracker as the course winds through streets normally associated with F1 racing and Bond films. Our own Cadel Evans will be competing again for his 5th year, and is favoured to finish at least in the top 5. You can follow Cadel's twitter here.

Cadel Evans

Sadly Evans has finished second for the last 2 years through a combination of weak teams and slightly less than ideal preparation. This year will probably not be too different, as his team, Silence-Lotto hasn't really gained much strength in the last 12 months. The rider who won the King of the Mountain classification in '08, Bernard Kohl, was signed to Silence-Lotto to help Cadel in the mountain stages for this year, then tested positive for drugs and was banned. To make things worse, one of Cadels current team-mates was busted for blood-doping in a test taken 2 years ago. So things really aren't looking so good for perpetual bridesmaid Cadel.

To make things even more interesting, Lance Armstrong - possibly the greatest cyclist ever - is riding again after retiring in 2005 in a team (Astana) with the winner from 2007 Alberto Contador. Armstrong says he will support Contador, but everyone is pretty sure Lance won't be able to resist the temptation to make a lunge for glory.

Anyway to get you in the mood, I present Kraftwerk's ode to the Tour:

And for those of you who want to see what Lance Armstrong is capable of, check out this epic climbing duel between him and Marco Pantani.

Interestingly Pantani died a few years later of Cocaine poisoning.

Of course some people only watch for the crashes, so for the sadists among us, here is a butt-clenching compendium of Tour crashes with pithy commentary.

No matter what happens, it's going to be an interesting Tour. I'm looking forward to many late nights watching super fit men in spandex ride their pushies around.
